Fervo Energy Achieves Record $10B Valuation in Largest Clean Energy IPO
Houston-based geothermal startup Fervo Energy has completed the largest initial public offering in clean energy history, achieving a market valuation exceeding $10 billion. The company's stock surged 35% on its first trading day, closing at $36.54 after raising $1.89 billion. Backed by prominent investors including Bill Gates and Google, Fervo utilizes enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) that combine traditional geothermal science with modern oil-drilling and fracking techniques to create scalable, 24/7 carbon-free power. This technology addresses the intermittency issues of wind and solar while avoiding the waste challenges of nuclear power. Fervo is currently constructing its first commercial plant, Cape Station, in Utah, a 500-megawatt project scheduled to begin delivering power to Southern California Edison by late 2026. The IPO success highlights the growing demand for reliable energy sources to support the rapid expansion of AI data centers. With federal tax credits extending through 2033, Fervo aims to reduce costs significantly, positioning geothermal energy as a competitive alternative to gas and solar power in the evolving energy landscape.
