FBI will no longer investigate ICE confrontations, The New York Times reports
According to a New York Times report, the FBI has been instructed to stop investigating assault claims against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, shifting oversight to Homeland Security Investigations, an arm of ICE. The change, communicated in writing to FBI managers on July 16, 2026, could reduce accountability for immigration agents, as DHS lacks jurisdiction over civil rights violations. The report comes after two fatal ICE shootings in July 2026: the killing of Colombian national Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine and Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security have jointly denied any change in oversight, stating that the FBI will continue to investigate in accordance with agency policy.
