Estonian Olympic Committee Opposes IOC Decision on Belarusian Athletes
The Estonian Olympic Committee (EOK) has strongly criticized the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) recent decision to allow Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flag. The EOK argues that as long as Russia and its ally Belarus continue military aggression against Ukraine, there is no place for their representatives in the Olympic movement. Acting EOK president Gerd Kanter emphasized that sport must not be used to normalize aggression or create a false impression of normalcy. While the EOK welcomed the IOC's decision to maintain restrictions on Russian athletes due to systematic violations of the Olympic Charter, it condemned the easing of rules for Belarus. The committee views national symbols as tools of soft power for aggressor states and aims to protect Estonian athletes from propaganda scenarios. Despite this opposition, the EOK stated it would not withdraw from competitions if required to face Russian or Belarusian competitors. The organization is coordinating with other Baltic states to uphold core Olympic values amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
