Energy Department removes more than 1,600 webpages from public website
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) removed over 1,600 webpages from its Energy Saver section by July 3, 2026, eliminating consumer resources on home energy conservation, including DIY assessment guides and thermostat recommendations. The purge occurred during a heat wave affecting much of the country, and shortly after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents to set AC to 78 degrees—guidance that had previously appeared on the DOE site. The Trump administration simultaneously proposed a rule to permanently end appliance efficiency standards, which critics view as part of a broader pattern of removing accessible climate-related information from federal websites. The Environmental Data and Governance Initiative noted the removals limit public access to information that could be used to oppose regulatory changes. The DOE did not explain why the pages were taken down.
