Disy Leader Demetriou Reaffirms Cyprus Settlement as Top Priority

Annita Demetriou, leader of the Democratic Rally (Disy) party in Cyprus, has declared that resolving the Cyprus problem remains her party's top priority, emphasizing its critical importance to national survival. Her statement follows recent comments by President Nikos Christodoulides, who indicated that a concrete settlement plan could emerge before the end of 2026 due to a new initiative by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Demetriou stressed the need for constant preparedness, collective responsibility, and national unity to support the president's diplomatic efforts. She affirmed Disy's readiness to contribute to breaking the current impasse through negotiations grounded in international law and European Union principles. Additionally, Demetriou urged other political parties to publicly clarify their positions to ensure transparency with the public after fifty-two years of division. Meanwhile, President Christodoulides highlighted that key developments depend on Turkey and reaffirmed his commitment to a bizonal bicommunal federation, rejecting any two-state solution. Preparations for the next phase of talks are ongoing, with UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin scheduled to return to Cyprus in early June, and an enlarged informal conference expected during the summer.
