Dick Advocaat Returns to Coach Curaçao, Set to Become Oldest World Cup Manager

Dutch coach Dick Advocaat is returning to lead the Curaçao national football team for the 2026 World Cup, marking his third appearance in the tournament. At 78 years old, Advocaat is poised to become the oldest head coach in World Cup history, surpassing Otto Rehhagel’s previous record. His appointment follows the recent departure of Fred Rutten, who struggled to gain player support after replacing Advocaat earlier this year due to family health issues. The Curaçao Football Federation confirmed the decision to ensure stability and continuity ahead of the team's historic debut in the competition. Curaçao, an autonomous Caribbean territory with approximately 156,000 inhabitants, will be the smallest nation ever to compete in the World Cup. The squad, largely composed of players developed in the Netherlands, faces a challenging group stage including matches against Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast. This edition of the World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is the first to feature 48 teams. Advocaat’s return aims to unify the squad and prepare them for their inaugural match against Germany in Houston on June 14.
