Developer Uses AI to Port The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Natively to iOS
Developer Chris 'Kahris' Sotraidis has created HarkinianPad, a native port of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for iOS and iPadOS, using OpenAI's Codex and GPT-5.6 Sol AI tools. The port is based on the Ship of Harkinian engine, which itself stems from a 2021 decompilation of the Nintendo 64 classic into C code by the Zelda Research Team. HarkinianPad runs natively on Apple devices without emulation, offering widescreen support, 60 FPS gameplay, and touch or Bluetooth controller input. It is open-source and available on GitHub, but users must provide their own legally obtained ROM. The project demonstrates how AI coding tools can enable solo developers to bring retro games to modern platforms, ahead of Nintendo's official remake for the Switch 2.
