Developer Uses AI to Port The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Natively to iOS
Developer Chris 'Kahris' Sotraidis has created HarkinianPad, a native port of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for iOS and iPadOS, using OpenAI's Codex and GPT-5.6 Sol AI tools. The port is based on the Ship of Harkinian engine, which itself originated from a 2021 decompilation of the Nintendo 64 classic into C code by the Zelda Research Team. HarkinianPad runs natively as an Arm64 application using Apple's Metal API, offering widescreen support, full-screen mode, and 60 FPS gameplay—a significant upgrade from the original's 240p resolution at 20 FPS. It features a touch-friendly control scheme and supports Bluetooth controllers, keyboards, and mice. The open-source project is available on GitHub but requires users to provide their own legally obtained ROM for game assets. This marks the first time Ocarina of Time runs natively on Apple mobile devices without emulation.
