Democrats are more politically segregated than Republicans in the workplace

A recent study by Justin Frake, Reuben Hurst, and Max Kagan, analyzing data from over 45 million workers, finds that Democrats are more politically segregated in the workplace than Republicans. The average Democrat's coworkers are 11.7 percentage points more Democratic than the average Republican's. After controlling for geography, industry, and occupation, segregation drops to 2.9 percentage points, comparable to gender segregation. Segregation is highest among political donors and senior executives. Notably, Republicans experience higher exposure to Democrats than vice versa. The study also shows that political segregation has remained stable from 2012 to 2024. The findings highlight significant partisan sorting in American workplaces.
