Daily Orforglipron Pill Helps Maintain Weight Loss After Stopping Injections, Trial Shows
A landmark clinical trial published in Nature Medicine and presented at the European Congress on Obesity 2026 reveals that a daily oral pill, orforglipron, can help patients maintain significant weight loss after discontinuing injectable GLP-1 medications. The study, funded by Eli Lilly, followed 376 US patients who had previously lost weight using tirzepatide or semaglutide injections. Participants who switched to orforglipron retained approximately 75-80% of their lost weight over one year, significantly outperforming those given a placebo. Researchers suggest this oral alternative could prevent more than 200 obesity-associated diseases and reduce the need for multiple long-term medications for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. Experts highlight that while injectables are effective, they are expensive and burdensome; orforglipron offers a cheaper, more convenient option for long-term obesity management. This development supports treating obesity as a chronic disease, potentially preventing progression from overweight to severe obesity and alleviating strain on healthcare systems like the NHS.
