Conference on Post-Soviet Era in Uzhhorod Seeks New Solidarity
The RUTA Association for Central, South-Eastern and Eastern European, Baltic, Caucasus, Central and Northern Asian Studies held its third conference in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, focusing on global civil society engagement and the legacy of Soviet colonialism. Over 150 scientists, journalists, and artists gathered to discuss historical traumas often overlooked in Western discourse, including forced Russification, famine in Kazakhstan, deportations of ethnic groups, and nuclear tests in Semipalatinsk. The conference highlighted the ecological catastrophe of the Aral Sea and the psychological impact of Soviet-era trauma. Inspired by philosopher Tereza Hendl, the association advocates for processing trauma. The event aimed to give voice to Eastern European and Central Asian perspectives often marginalized in Western academia.
