Coal Pollution Aerosols Significantly Reduce Global Solar Power Production
A new study published in Nature Sustainability reveals that aerosols, particularly those derived from coal burning, significantly hinder solar power generation globally. Researchers utilized AI-analyzed satellite imagery and crowdsourced data to create a comprehensive inventory of solar facilities, estimating potential versus actual energy production. The findings indicate that in 2023, over 25% of potential solar output was lost, with aerosols accounting for approximately 6% of this loss, equivalent to the annual output of 84 coal plants. Coal-derived sulfur dioxide aerosols constitute nearly half of the problematic particles. The impact varies regionally; China experiences a 7.7% reduction in solar efficiency due to aerosols, closely mirroring its coal plant distribution, whereas the US sees a lower 3% loss due to geographic separation between solar farms and coal plants. However, China's recent efforts to upgrade coal infrastructure and retire polluters are beginning to mitigate these effects. The study highlights a paradox where coal not only emits carbon but also actively suppresses the productivity of its primary renewable competitor, providing further economic and operational impetus for accelerating the transition away from coal-fired energy sources.
