CMA CGM to Invest $820m in Kenya’s Port of Mombasa Expansion
French shipping giant CMA CGM has committed an $820 million investment to modernize and expand two terminals at the Port of Mombasa, Kenya. The agreement was formalized during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron. This strategic infrastructure project aims to significantly increase cargo-handling capacity, as the port currently operates near its limits after handling 2.11 million TEUs last year, representing a 5.5% annual growth. The expansion is designed to strengthen regional trade corridors, enhance supply-chain efficiency, and improve connectivity to global shipping routes. It will also bolster inland logistics networks linking Kenya to landlocked neighbors such as Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader strategy to upgrade port infrastructure through public-private partnerships. For CMA CGM, this move reinforces its growing footprint in African maritime logistics, following recent developments in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Congo, and the opening of a regional office in Abidjan.
