Chinese Researchers Develop Lithium Battery Resilient to Extreme Cold
Researchers from Nankai University and the Shanghai Institute of Space Power Sources in China have developed a new lithium-metal battery capable of operating efficiently in extreme cold temperatures. The breakthrough, published in the journal Nature, utilizes a novel hydrofluorocarbon electrolyte that prevents the performance degradation typically seen in lithium batteries under freezing conditions. Laboratory tests demonstrated that pouch-type cells achieved an energy density exceeding 700 Wh/kg at room temperature and maintained approximately 400 Wh/kg at -50°C, with functionality continuing down to -70°C. This innovation addresses two major limitations of current battery technology: low energy density and poor cold-weather performance. While the results are currently confined to a laboratory setting, the findings hold significant potential for applications in electric vehicles, space missions, polar exploration, and military equipment. However, experts caution that industrial scaling, cost reduction, safety verification, and long-term stability tests are still required before this technology can be commercialized. This development represents a critical step toward overcoming the thermal dependencies that currently restrict battery efficiency in harsh climates.
