Chinese Alleged Hacking Ringleader Extradited to South Korea

A 40-year-old Chinese national, identified as the alleged ringleader of a cybercrime syndicate, was extradited from Thailand to South Korea on May 13, 2026. The suspect is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated hacking operation between August 2023 and April 2025 that infiltrated budget mobile carriers and other firms, resulting in theft exceeding US$25 million. The group allegedly used stolen personal data to access victims' financial and cryptocurrency accounts without authorization. High-profile victims included conglomerate chairmen, startup executives, and BTS megastar Jungkook. Although Jungkook's securities account identity was stolen and shares in HYBE worth 8.4 billion won were targeted, he avoided actual financial loss due to immediate payment suspension measures. The arrest occurred in Bangkok through an Interpol-led operation in cooperation with South Korea's National Police Agency. An alleged 36-year-old Chinese accomplice was previously extradited in August 2025 and is currently facing trial. This extradition marks a significant development in South Korea's efforts to combat international cybercrime networks targeting its citizens and prominent public figures.
