China's Geely to make electric SUVs at Ford Spain plant, jointly develop model for Europe
Chinese automaker Geely Auto will produce two electric SUVs at Ford's Valencia, Spain plant under a joint venture (66% Ford, 33% Geely). The first model, the EX5, is already sold in Europe and will roll off the line in 2028. The partnership helps Geely localize production ahead of upcoming EU 'Made in Europe' rules requiring minimum local content for EVs. For Ford, the deal utilizes excess factory capacity as its European sales have declined sharply. The collaboration builds on a long relationship dating to Geely's 2010 purchase of Volvo Cars from Ford. This is Geely Auto's first European production facility. Spain is attractive to Chinese EV makers due to lower labor and energy costs and being Europe's second-largest car manufacturing country.
