Catholic Day: Human Chain in Würzburg Demands Church Reforms and Female Leadership

During the Catholic Day celebrations on May 15, 2026, reform advocates formed a human chain stretching from the cathedral to the Augustinian Church in downtown Würzburg, Germany. Approximately 30 organizations participated in the demonstration, including prominent groups such as 'We are Church,' 'Maria 2.0,' and the Catholic German Women’s Association (KDFB). The protesters, predominantly women, sang and rallied for significant structural changes within the Catholic Church. Their primary demands include the ordination of women to positions such as bishops and potentially the papacy, arguing that the Church must embody true equality. Additionally, the demonstrators called for urgent action to address and prevent sexual and spiritual violence, as well as the cover-ups associated with these abuses within the institution. They expressed a desire for a Church that is close to the people, focused on the common good, and responsive to the majority of Catholics in Germany who support these changes.
