Canada Contacts 26 Low-Risk Hantavirus Exposures from MV Hondius Flight

Canadian public health officials are contacting twenty-six individuals considered to be at low or minimal risk of hantavirus infection after they shared a flight with a confirmed case. This precautionary measure follows an outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. While European authorities deemed these travelers no risk, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, emphasized a cautious approach due to the virus's severity. These individuals are not required to self-isolate but are being monitored for symptoms. Currently, nine people in Canada are classified as high-risk contacts and must self-isolate. Additionally, seven others in Ontario are isolating as low-risk contacts of high-risk individuals. Dr. Reimer stated that further spread within Canada is not expected and there is no evidence of asymptomatic transmission. The incident originated when a Dutch woman, whose husband died at sea, flew from Saint Helena to Johannesburg before being removed from a connecting flight to Amsterdam due to symptoms; she subsequently died in South Africa. The general population risk remains low.
