Breakdancers to Take Over Tartu's Kammivabrik Center for Major Competition
Tartu’s Kammivabrik center will host the first major street dancing competition of the year on Saturday, May 16, organized by the Estonian Street Dancers Association (Eesti Tänavatantsijate Liit). The event features both breaking and upright street dance styles, with competitions beginning at noon and concluding around 7:30 p.m. Organizers highlight the inclusion of an international jury, featuring notable figures such as German B-girl Jilou, French judge Dice, and English judge Omni, who helped develop the Olympic breaking judging system. Participants from Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, and Latvia have registered, aiming to raise the competitive level for local Estonian dancers. Head organizer Mari Venski emphasized the positive impact of foreign competitors and the importance of audience support in creating an emotional atmosphere. The competition will determine winners across nine categories, with the top eight in each advancing through quarterfinals to final battles. This event underscores the growing prominence of street dance culture in Estonia, showcasing improved gender equality in performance levels and strong community engagement.
