Brazil Government Prepares R$30 Billion Vehicle Renewal Program for App Drivers

The Brazilian government, under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is preparing to launch a R$30 billion financing program aimed at helping Uber and taxi drivers renew their vehicles. Scheduled for announcement on May 19 in São Paulo, the initiative will be formalized through a Provisional Measure and involves the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The program offers subsidized credit and may allow the acquisition of imported vehicles, with specific incentives for electrifying fleets. To qualify, drivers must have completed at least 100 trips in the previous 12 months, a criterion designed to broaden access while minimizing fraud risks. This move is part of a broader strategy to stimulate consumption and expand credit ahead of the presidential elections in five months. It also signals an effort by the Lula administration to strengthen ties with app drivers, a demographic often aligned with right-wing politics.
