BlackRock's GIP and Microsoft-backed AI group acquire Aligned Data Centers for $40 billion
BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), UAE-based MGX, and the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership (AIP) have closed a $40 billion acquisition of data center developer Aligned Data Centers. The deal, first announced in October 2025, involves purchasing 100% equity from Macquarie Asset Management. Aligned Data Centers, headquartered in Dallas, operates over 6.4 gigawatts of capacity across 51 locations, primarily in the U.S., Mexico, and South America. The buyers will also provide $5 billion in additional capital for expansion. AIP, launched in September 2024 by BlackRock, Microsoft, Nvidia, MGX, and GIP, aims to mobilize up to $100 billion for AI infrastructure. This marks AIP's first investment. Aligned CEO Andrew Schaap stated the deal allows the company to 'move quicker and build bigger than ever before.' The acquisition underscores surging demand for data centers driven by AI growth.
