Biopharma Industry Endorses Dr. Richard Pazdur for FDA Commissioner Role

Following the resignation of FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, nearly 400 leaders from the biopharma industry have signed a letter endorsing Dr. Richard Pazdur as the next commissioner. Addressed to US President Donald Trump, the coalition of biotech CEOs, investors, and patient advocates argues that Pazdur’s 26-year tenure at the agency provides the necessary stability amid a current crisis of confidence. The letter cites decisional volatility, staff exodus, and eroding scientific predictability under recent leadership as critical issues requiring an experienced hand. Pazdur, who previously headed the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and founded the Oncology Center of Excellence, is credited with streamlining cancer drug approvals through initiatives like Project Orbis. Although he retired in December 2025 due to disagreements with the administration's direction, industry leaders believe his track record offers the unimpeachable scientific credibility needed to restore trust. The endorsement emphasizes not just support for Pazdur, but a broader demand for FDA leadership that maintains regulatory rigor and speed despite political pressures. Kyle Diamantas currently serves as acting commissioner while the search for a permanent successor continues.
