Austrian Actor Johannes Krisch Dies at 59
Austrian actor Johannes Krisch, widely regarded as one of the country's most memorable character actors, has died at the age of 59 in Vienna. The announcement was made by the Theater in der Josefstadt, where he was a long-standing ensemble member alongside the Burgtheater. Krisch had been struggling with health problems for some time. He was known for numerous stage, film, and television roles, including appearances in the crime series 'Tatort' and David Schalko's series 'Braunschlag'. He also starred in the Oscar-nominated film 'Revanche' (2008) and the film 'Märzengrund' (2022). Former Theater in der Josefstadt director Herbert Föttinger honored him as 'one of the most important actors of his generation,' praising his intensity, truthfulness, and deep humanity. Krisch once described his preparation ritual as spitting three times on the stage floor and knocking on wood.
