Career and Notable Roles
Krisch was a long-standing ensemble member at both the Burgtheater and the Theater in der Josefstadt. He had been struggling with health problems for some time.
On television, he was seen in David Schalko's successful series Braunschlag and appeared in several episodes of Tatort. In film, Krisch delivered a standout lead performance in Götz Spielmann's Oscar-nominated drama Revanche (2008). He also played the role of dropout Elias in Adrian Goiginger's Märzengrund (2022).
On stage at the Theater in der Josefstadt, he performed as the stubborn butcher who refuses to come to terms with the Nazis in Der Bockerer.
Tributes
Herbert Föttinger, former director of the Theater in der Josefstadt, honored Krisch as "one of the most important actors of his generation."
"Johannes Krisch possessed the rare gift of not playing characters, but experiencing them in the moment – and letting the audience share in that experience," Föttinger said. "Krisch touched his audience with his intensity, his truthfulness, and his deep humanity."
When asked how he prepared for his stage performances, Krisch once replied: "I spit three times on the stage floor and knock on wood."
