ASEAN can capture the EU’s “carbon tariff” jobs
This op-ed by Melinda Martinus, published by the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, argues that ASEAN countries can benefit from the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), often referred to as a 'carbon tariff'. Instead of viewing the CBAM as a threat, the author suggests that ASEAN nations can position themselves as attractive destinations for green manufacturing and low-carbon production. By investing in renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and adopting sustainable practices, ASEAN can attract investment and jobs that might otherwise move to other regions. The piece highlights the potential for ASEAN to become a hub for green industries, leveraging its growing economies and strategic location to capture economic opportunities arising from the EU's climate policies. It emphasizes proactive policy measures and regional cooperation to turn the carbon tariff into a competitive advantage.
