Amazon taps Alexa executive as Leo satellite business’s first finance VP
Amazon's Leo satellite business, formerly known as Project Kuiper, has appointed Mike Recupero as its first dedicated VP of finance, signaling its evolution into a more independent entity. Recupero, previously Alexa's finance chief and a former GameStop CFO, will oversee Leo's multibillion-dollar infrastructure buildout, including satellite manufacturing, launches, and the integration of Globalstar, which Amazon is acquiring for $11.6 billion. The move is part of Amazon's strategy to assemble a seasoned leadership team around Leo, which has already launched 396 satellites and completed 14 missions, making it the third-largest satellite constellation in orbit. CEO Andy Jassy has indicated Leo has revenue commitments from enterprise and government customers. Bank of America estimates Leo could generate $20-25 billion in annual revenue by 2032 and be worth $200-275 billion. However, risks remain, including a recent Blue Origin rocket explosion during a ground test. Amit Singh has replaced Recupero as Alexa's finance lead.
