ADB to Evaluate $750 Million Financing for Türkiye's Northern Ring Railway
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is preparing to evaluate the first tranche of a $1.5 billion financing plan for Türkiye's Northern Ring Railway project. Leah Gutierrez, ADB General Director for Central and West Asia, announced that the bank's board of directors will review the initial $750 million commitment in June 2026. This railway initiative represents Türkiye's largest externally financed infrastructure project, with a total estimated cost of $6.75 billion. The World Bank serves as the lead financier, contributing $2 billion, while the ADB acts as a co-financier utilizing the World Bank's procedures. Gutierrez emphasized Türkiye's strategic role as a bridge between Asia and Europe, highlighting resilience and regional connectivity as key pillars of the ADB's engagement. The bank aims for sustainable annual financing of approximately $3 billion in Türkiye by 2026. Additionally, Gutierrez discussed broader regional challenges, noting that geopolitical conflicts and energy insecurity are shifting Asia's development strategy from efficiency to resilience, impacting commodity markets and supply chains across the region.
