German influencer Laura Schmitt fears online hate at World Cup for supporting Spain

The suitcases are packed, the outfits chosen, the tickets booked. World Cup euphoria is running high — after all, the title is at stake for her boyfriend. His team is among the favorites at the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. But mixed in with the anticipation is also a fear: of hatred and terrible hostility. Just like two years ago at the European Championship.

Laura Flies to the World Cup in the USA

This is about Laura "Abla" Schmitt, the girlfriend of Spain's playmaker Dani Olmo. She is flying to Atlanta, Georgia, where the Iberians have set up their first games and base camp.

"I'm flying to Atlanta, unfortunately I'll miss the first game, but I still have a job and need to earn money. We don't know if Spain will stay in Atlanta or move the base again," Laura says in her podcast Ziemlich beste Fremde.

Spain plays against Cape Verde on Monday (6 p.m. / ARD).

She makes it clear that she won't be with Olmo "the whole time" and will "probably hardly see him. Only when he's free." Yet it's clear who the native North German is rooting for.

"They will win," she says about Spain. The fact that there are many title favorites this time "doesn't bother me, Spain wins," she adds.

Massive Hostility Because of Spain Jersey

But this excitement is also linked to a fear.

"I'm curious if I'll be the most hated person in the nation again in my Spain jersey. That's funny," she says, adding ironically: "Then having to give up my German passport again — no desire at all."

The background: Two years ago, when Olmo was still playing for RB Leipzig, Laura first appeared in a Spain jersey and wrote on her social media channels: "I guess I'm a Spain fan now." She received massive hostility and hatred online for it.

The influencer was called a "traitor," was advised to emigrate, and was told to give up her German passport if she wasn't supporting the country she was born in at the World Cup. "Then go to Spain," people wrote on her channels back then.

Laura now lives in Barcelona. Olmo became Spanish champion with Barcelona.

That her passion for Spain stems from love for her boyfriend should be a given.

"I can only bet on Spain because I would be happy if Spain wins," she says — and adds with a wink: "From a football perspective with my expert eye, I would also say: Spain wins."
