US midterm elections were held on November 3, 2026, with all 435 House seats and roughly one-third of the Senate up for election, along with 36 of 50 governorships and all 50 state legislatures. According to the taz.de live ticker, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia governor's race, becoming the first African American woman to serve as a US governor, while Republican Byron Davis won in Florida, giving the Deep South two Black governors. The article notes that control of Congress may not be clear for days if results are close, and it frames the elections as a referendum on whether President Donald Trump can continue to count on support from both chambers. The ticker also links to explainers on the stakes of the midterms and on what Trump might do if Republicans lose.

Background
On 3 November, the United States holds its midterm elections. The vote will determine whether US President Donald Trump can continue to count on the support of both chambers of Congress. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and roughly one third of the Senate are up for election.
But there is more at stake: 36 of the 50 governorships are being contested, and state legislatures are being elected in all 50 states. Because of the different US time zones, the first polling stations closed at 1 am German time, and the last will close at 7 am on Wednesday morning.
Initial results are expected during the night. It is unclear when the balance of power in Congress will be settled — in close races, this can take days.
03:22 — Historic win in Georgia
Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has won in Georgia and will become the first African American female governor of the United States. In Florida, Republican Byron Davis, also African American, has won. That makes two Black governors in the Deep South.
03:20 — Good morning, good evening!
It is 9:20 pm in Washington and New York. We are starting our live ticker.
