Elon Musk's AI-generated version of the Odyssey, produced via Grok Imagine, has drawn widespread criticism after its first episode was released. The Guardian called it the 'most boring and pointless' response to Christopher Nolan's film, while a Forbes writer described it as 'simply terrible' with 'stilted dialogue and lifeless characters.' The roughly seven-minute episode depicts Odysseus feigning madness to avoid the Trojan War. Grok Imagine later published a behind-the-scenes look at how scenes and dialogue were created with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, using a team of three to five creatives. Musk had promised in July a 'full-length film' that would be 'historically accurate' and do justice to Homer's work, though the Odyssey is a mythological epic, not a historical account. Nolan's Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, has grossed nearly $1.8 billion worldwide.
Source report
Elon Musk's AI-generated version of "The Odyssey" falls short of his announced feature-film ambitions. The first episode has drawn criticism for "stilted dialogue and lifeless characters."
Background
Three months ago, Elon Musk announced plans to create his own AI version of the ancient epic, following Christopher Nolan's box-office hit "The Odyssey." Now Grok Imagine has offered insights into the production on Platform X. Shortly beforehand, the image and video generator from Musk's company xAI released a first episode of the project—and garnered criticism and mockery in response.
Media Criticism
The British Guardian ran a headline calling the interpretation the "most boring and pointless" response imaginable to Nolan's epic. A Forbes writer described the video as "simply terrible. It is almost ridiculously uncomfortable, with stilted dialogue and lifeless characters." Other comments were also overwhelmingly negative.
What the Episode Shows
The roughly seven-minute AI-generated episode depicts Odysseus initially feigning madness to avoid fighting in the Trojan War. The deception is uncovered, however, and he agrees to set off for Troy.
On X, Grok Imagine has now published something of a guide detailing how the scenes and dialogue were created in collaboration with production studio Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. A small team of three to five creatives produces the episodes, according to the post.
Musk Had Announced a "Feature-Length Film"
Musk had originally announced a film, not individual episodes. In July, the tech billionaire wrote on X: "Before the end of the year, Grok Imagine will make a feature-length film about The Odyssey that is historically accurate and does justice to Homer's work."
Homer's ancient poem "The Odyssey," however, is not a historical account. The epic features magic, cyclopes, and sirens, among other elements. Musk left open what he meant by a historically accurate depiction. He had previously criticized the casting of a Black woman as the mythical figure Helen in Nolan's film, calling it a role in "a foundational work of European literature."
Nolan's "The Odyssey" Among the Year's Biggest Box-Office Hits
"The Odyssey" is one of the year's major cinematic hits. Since its summer release, the film has grossed nearly 1.8 billion US dollars worldwide, according to industry website Box Office Mojo.
In the film based on Homer's epic, Matt Damon portrays the Greek hero Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War, marked by storms, battles, and mythical dangers. Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron also star.
