Google introduced the Fitbit Edge on Monday, a new wearable positioned between the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch and priced at $179.99. It combines the Fitbit Air's slim band with an OLED display for map directions, notifications, weather, and music controls. Like the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Air, it works with Google Health Coach powered by Gemini, requiring a Google Health Premium subscription, and includes the Health Guardian feature for spotting changes in health measurements such as blood pressure and insulin resistance indicators. Google says the device automatically recognizes and logs up to 100 activities, supports over 50 exercise modes, offers on-screen workout prompts, and has GPS that is 40% more accurate than the previous generation, with sleep-stage detection 15% more accurate. Battery life is rated up to seven days, and it is water-resistant to 50 meters. Google's Fitbit lineup expanded on Monday with the introduction of the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable positioned between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch.
Design and Pricing
Priced at $179.99, the Fitbit Edge combines the Fitbit Air's slim band with an OLED display for checking map directions, notifications, weather, and music controls.
Health and Fitness Features
Like the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Air, the Edge works with Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini. A Google Health Premium subscription is required to use it. The coach can use your fitness, health, and medical information to put together weekly routines and workout plans, then adjust them around your schedule.
The device also comes with Google's Health Guardian feature, designed to spot notable changes in health measurements over time, including indicators related to blood pressure and insulin resistance. Google announced these features at the Pixel Watch 5 launch in August.
Activity Tracking
According to Google, the Fitbit Edge can automatically recognize and log up to 100 activities, including runs, bike rides, and walks. The company explains that it uses context from your movement to work out what you're doing and add it to your weekly goals. The device also supports more than 50 exercise modes and can offer on-screen prompts during workouts, such as a nudge to push harder or take a breather.
Accuracy and Battery Improvements
- GPS: Google claims the Fitbit Edge's built-in GPS is 40% more accurate than the previous generation, which should make it easier to track outdoor runs.
- Sleep tracking: Sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate than on earlier generations, helping the device provide better sleep summaries and coaching tips.
- Battery: Rated for up to seven days on a charge.
- Water resistance: Up to 50 meters.
Availability and Colors
The Fitbit Edge is available to preorder through the Google Store, with store availability set for October 27.
Color choices include Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon. There is also a Stephen Curry Special Edition, priced at $219.99.
