A detailed analysis by Aakash Gupta and Ankyth Shukla, who ran 12,500 PM job descriptions through Claude and GPT, defines three emerging tech roles: AI PM, Forward Deployed Engineer, and Product Builder. The AI PM builds AI models or features from a product management background. The Forward Deployed Engineer, a title originating at Palantir, writes production code for single customers with 25-50% travel, with OpenAI listing pay of $185K to $300K plus equity. The Product Builder, described as any PM building with AI, is seen by Freshworks' CPO Srini Raghavan as potentially replacing engineer, designer, and PM within five years. LinkedIn has replaced its APM program with an Associate Product Builder program. ShipBob lists $151K to $252K for its Senior AI Product Builder role. The key differentiator is whose hands the AI is in: building it into the product, into a customer's workflow, or into one's own hands to eliminate handoffs.

Here's what each job actually is, and which one to aim for.
LinkedIn recently replaced its APM program with an Associate Product Builder program. Freshworks' CPO, Srini Raghavan, believes "Product Builder" will replace the roles of engineer, designer, and PM within five years.
I sat down with @AnkythShukla, who analyzed 12,500 PM job descriptions using Claude and GPT, to clarify all three roles.
1. AI PM
A PM who builds AI models or AI features.
- Background: Comes from product management.
- Responsibilities: Ships specs, evaluations, and prototypes. Engineers write the production code. At an AI-native company, they might submit the occasional PR.
- Tools used: Claude and Claude Code, Notion AI, Slack, Amplitude, Dovetail, Miro, Bolt.
2. Forward Deployed Engineer
An engineer building a deployment for a single customer.
- Background: Starts in engineering or customer success.
- Responsibilities: Writes production code, using their own stack or the customer's. Works on site, with 25 to 50% travel. The title originated at Palantir.
- Compensation: OpenAI lists pay of $185K to $300K plus equity.
- Tools used: Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub, AWS, Docker, Postman, Slack Connect, Salesforce.
3. Product Builder
For now, any PM building with AI. Some believe it will eventually become the single title encompassing design, engineering, and PM.
- Background: Starts in PM, design, or engineering.
- Responsibilities: Uses AI to write code, then reviews it before shipping. LinkedIn's program expects you to "own products from idea to launch while building across product, design, and engineering."
- Compensation: ShipBob lists $151K to $252K for its Senior AI Product Builder role.
- Tools used: Claude Code, GitHub, Lovable, Bolt, Figma AI, Vercel, Supabase, Amplitude.
4. What Actually Separates Them
The key differentiator is whose hands the AI is in:
- The AI PM builds AI into the product.
- The Forward Deployed Engineer brings AI into one customer's workflow.
- The Product Builder puts AI in their own hands, and the handoffs disappear.
5. Which One to Aim For
- AI PM: If you want to go deep on AI while staying in product.
- Forward Deployed Engineer: If you're an engineer who prefers working with customers over tickets.
- Product Builder: If you want to build that first version yourself. You can get started from the PM seat you already hold today.
Most product builders today are AI PMs, and PM is still what the job posting says. That's the opening.
Which of the three are you aiming for?
