Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, 82, visited a Hyperglobus supermarket in western Moscow on October 7, 2026, where employees greeted him with applause. Schröder, who recently joined the supervisory board of the Russian retail chain, was accompanied by his wife. According to broadcaster RBC, he told staff: 'I am very happy to be here, to see this impressive market and the results of your work, and to get to know you, my dear colleagues.' The visit comes amid ongoing criticism of Schröder's ties to Russia and President Vladimir Putin, which he maintained after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and subsequent Western sanctions. Hyperglobus was spun off from the German Globus Holding last year. The report notes that Russia is currently seeking to take control of foreign companies' assets in the country.

Background
Schröder has faced ongoing criticism for his ties to the Russian economy and President Vladimir Putin. These connections persisted after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the subsequent Western sanctions. Schröder served as German Chancellor until 2005 and cultivated a close relationship with Putin during his tenure. He later worked for Russian state-owned enterprises.
