In an article attributed to President Donald J. Trump, he calls on Senate Republicans to pass the 'Sunshine Protection Act,' also referred to as the 'No More Changing of Clocks Act.' Trump argues that the twice-yearly clock change is costly, inconvenient, and harmful to crime rates, health, sports, and the economy. He claims the House passed the bill on July 14, 2026, with a 308-117 bipartisan vote, but that it is being held up in the Senate by Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas for unknown reasons. Trump asserts that most people prefer extra evening sunlight, and that ending the time change would reduce crime, car accidents, and health risks while boosting various industries and saving energy. He frames the issue as one that unites Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, and urges the Senate to act for a 'Great Bipartisan Victory.'
Source report
President Donald J. Trump calls on Senate Republicans to advance legislation ending biannual clock changes.
Republicans in the Senate must move forward on what I call the "No More Changing of Clocks Act," officially known as The Sunshine Protection Act. This ridiculous clock-changing process occurs twice a year, costs our country a fortune, and is detrimental to crime rates, public stress, sports, and nearly everything else imaginable.
Even the highly respected PGA Commissioner, Brian Rolapp, supports the bill, as it would allow for the completion of golf tournaments in winter when daylight runs short.
Public Support
People no longer want to change their clocks. Overwhelmingly, most prefer an extra hour of sunlight in the evening rather than in the morning.
House Passage
The House passed this bill on July 14, 2026, with a vote of 308–117, reflecting strong bipartisan support. Both Democrats and Republicans want it enacted.
Senate Stalled
The bill now awaits action in the U.S. Senate, where it could achieve another great bipartisan victory. Unfortunately, it is being held up by Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas for reasons unknown.
Widespread Frustration
- People are tired of changing clocks twice a year.
- Even most farmers would prefer additional evening time to harvest crops.
- The process is foolish, inconvenient, and in some cases very costly.
- For cities and states with watchtowers and hard-to-reach locations, it costs millions of dollars.
- Recent evidence shows it is also harmful to health due to the anxiety it creates.
Proven Benefits of Ending Time Changes
Leading medical, crime, and economic studies have conclusively shown that ceasing biannual time changes—providing one extra hour of natural sunlight in the evenings—will:
- Decrease robbery and murder rates
- Reduce car accidents, especially those involving pedestrians
- Lower risk for cardiac issues, stroke, and seasonal depression
- Make it safer for children to walk home from school
- Increase time with family
- Support extracurricular activities
- Boost the sports, fitness, tourism, retail, and restaurant industries
- Save money on energy bills
Conclusion
In short: leave the clocks as they are and never change them again. With near-unanimous public support, nobody wants to change their clocks twice a year. This is an issue that Republicans, Democrats, and Independents can unite behind.
