On September 28, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) announced the listing of four exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track three of its cross-market indices, marking a milestone in its index business expansion. The indices, launched earlier this year, aim to strengthen Hong Kong's links with major international markets, including joint indices with Bursa Malaysia and Korea Exchange. HKEX CEO Bonnie Chan stated the ETFs represent a key step in enriching investment choices and connecting Hong Kong with global markets, meeting growing demand for diversified portfolios and reinforcing Hong Kong's role as a gateway to China. Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift noted the ETF tracking the joint index offers investors a new channel to access opportunities in both Malaysia and Hong Kong, while also raising the profile of Malaysian companies among Chinese investors. Korea Exchange's Lee Boo-yeon highlighted the semiconductor index ETF as the first joint index product between the two exchanges, providing a new way to invest in the Asian semiconductor ecosystem.

Hong Kong, September 28 – Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) announced today the listing of four exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking three of its cross-market indices, all launched this month. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the Group’s index business expansion and underscores its commitment to product innovation and offering diversified investment opportunities to global investors.
HKEX introduced the three indices earlier this year with the aim of strengthening Hong Kong’s connections with major international markets. The first two indices are co-branded indices developed in collaboration with Bursa Malaysia and Korea Exchange (KRX), respectively.
Indices designed in this manner also support market product innovation, facilitate diversified investment allocation for both mainland Chinese and international investors, and promote cross-border capital flows.
Bonnie Y Chan, HKEX Group Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome the first ETFs tracking HKEX’s cross-market index series. These products represent an important step in our collaboration with exchanges and partners across Asia and the globe to enrich investment choices and connect Hong Kong with international markets. The three indices bring together investment opportunities from different markets and sectors, meeting the growing demand for diversification among investors and reinforcing Hong Kong’s role as a gateway connecting Mainland China with the world.”
Chan added: “We are pleased to see the steady growth of HKEX’s index business, with more products tracking our indices. Through the development of proprietary and co-branded indices across various asset classes, we are committed to driving product innovation, facilitating capital flows, and creating opportunities for issuers, asset managers, and investors, supporting the growth of Hong Kong’s multi-asset ecosystem.”
Datuk Fadzli Mohd, Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia, said: “We welcome the launch of an ETF by CSOP Asset Management tracking the HKEX Bursa Malaysia Large Cap Index. This marks the first investment product based on this co-branded benchmark index. The index brings together 30 representative listed companies from Malaysia and Hong Kong, offering investors a new channel to capture investment opportunities in both markets. This development also helps raise the profile of Malaysian companies among investors in Hong Kong and Mainland China, and further promotes broader collaboration between our exchanges, strengthening regional market connectivity.”
Lee Boo-yeon, Head of the Future Business Division at Korea Exchange, said: “We are pleased to welcome the listing of an ETF tracking the HKEX KRX Semiconductor Index. This is the first co-branded index launched in collaboration between KRX and HKEX. It demonstrates how both exchanges can leverage their expertise in market operations and index development to foster cross-market cooperation and support investors in regional asset allocation. The index brings together leading semiconductor-related companies listed in Korea and Hong Kong, providing investors with a new avenue to participate in the Asian semiconductor ecosystem.”
