At the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Conference, Zhu Huarong, Chairman and Party Secretary of Changan Automobile, forecast that the global automotive industry will undergo significant consolidation over the next 3-5 years. He stated that automakers need annual sales of 3.5 million vehicles just to survive, 5-7 million to get by, and 8-10 million to thrive. Zhu predicted that the top 10 global automakers will capture 80% of the market by 2030, driven by intensifying Matthew effect (where the strong get stronger) and industry ecosystem effects that could surpass those seen in the smartphone industry. He described industry integration and restructuring as inevitable. The remarks were reported by Cailianshe journalist Liu Yang.

Shanghai, September 22 — Zhu Huarong, Chairman and Party Secretary of Changan Automobile, stated today at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress that the annual sales threshold for global automakers is rising significantly, driven by the evolutionary patterns of the automotive industry.
According to Zhu, over the next three to five years:
- Automakers with annual sales of 3.5 million units will only be able to "survive."
- Those selling 5 to 7 million units will be able to "get by."
- Companies achieving 8 to 10 million units will be able to "thrive."
"The Matthew effect is intensifying. If the ecological effects of the automotive industry can surpass those of the mobile phone industry, it is expected that by 2030, the top ten global automakers will account for 80% of the market share. Industrial consolidation and restructuring are inevitable," Zhu said.
