In August, joint-venture (JV) new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in China grew 35% year-on-year, contrasting with a 10.1% overall market decline, as JV brands deepen their NEV push. On September 20, FAW-Volkswagen launched the ID. AURA T6, starting at 129,900 yuan, and reported over 30,000 orders. The T6 is the first model based on the CEA electronic architecture, integrating three core technology IPs. It marks a strategic shift: Chinese engineers led product definition, with Sino-German joint decision-making, aiming to better address local user needs. FAW-Volkswagen VP Wang Shengli acknowledged that their earlier ID.1.0 models lagged in smart cockpit and driver assistance features. The company has deployed nearly 3,000 staff to smart R&D and established a product CEO mechanism to accelerate decision-making. Despite the strong initial orders, the article notes that many JV NEVs fail to sustain sales momentum; only 8% of China's 700 NEV models achieve 5,000 monthly sales. The T6's long-term performance will test whether FAW-Volkswagen's new strategy can overcome this 'hot start, weak sustain' pattern.

In August, joint venture (JV) new energy vehicles (NEVs) carved out a counter-trend trajectory amid an overall market decline. Data shows that while retail sales of NEVs fell by 10.1% year-on-year, retail sales of mainstream JV brands grew by 35%. Meanwhile, the NEV penetration rate for mainstream JV brands rose to 15.7%.
Behind these two growth figures lies a deepening of JV brands'布局 in the new energy sector, with accelerated product launches and an increasing number of localized offerings.
FAW-Volkswagen ID. AURA T6 Launches with Strong Pre-orders
On September 20, FAW-Volkswagen launched the ID. AURA T6, with a starting price of RMB 129,900. According to FAW-Volkswagen, the T6 has already received over 30,000 orders. Dealers also reported that foot traffic increased by 40% after pre-sales began.

As the first mass-produced model in the ID. AURA series, the T6 is built on the CEA electronic and electrical architecture, integrating three core technology IPs: Xingyun Intelligent Driving, Yunqi Cockpit, and Xingyun Chassis. It represents the first comprehensive application of FAW-Volkswagen's Smart Electric 2.0 technology in a production vehicle.
Shift in Product Definition Strategy
In the past, JV brands typically followed a traditional path of "overseas definition, domestic implementation," where product definition authority rested with foreign partners, resulting in long decision-making chains and slow transmission of user feedback.
With the ID. AURA T6, FAW-Volkswagen has changed this logic. Leveraging the localized CEA architecture, the Chinese side now leads product definition, with Sino-German collaborative decision-making, pushing user needs further to the front end of product development.
Wang Shengli, Deputy General Manager (Commercial) of FAW-Volkswagen Co., Ltd. and General Manager of the Party Committee and General Manager of FAW-Volkswagen Sales Co., Ltd., stated that during the T6's R&D phase, the brand conducted an in-depth review of massive amounts of real feedback from Chinese family users, voluntarily relinquishing some product definition authority to "hand the microphone to users."
Lessons from the ID. 1.0 Era
Before the ID. AURA T6, FAW-Volkswagen had launched ID. series NEV models but failed to produce a blockbuster. Official data shows that FAW-Volkswagen has sold approximately 230,000 ID. vehicles to date. However, for a company that has produced and sold over 30 million vehicles cumulatively in the Chinese market, this figure is far from satisfactory.
"To be honest, users of ID. 1.0-era electric vehicles generally recognized them as typical German cars: good handling, solid chassis tuning, real-world range, and reliable build quality. But over the past six or seven years, China's NEV market has developed very rapidly, and we were slow in introducing in-vehicle experience and integrated driving assistance features. This is a reality we must face," Wang said.
Key Changes in Smart Electric 2.0
Compared to the ID. 1.0 phase, the Smart Electric 2.0 series, represented by the ID. AURA T6, features multiple changes:
- Closing the gap in smart cockpits and driving assistance: FAW-Volkswagen now has nearly 3,000 employees dedicated to R&D in intelligent connectivity, smart cockpits, and driving assistance.
- Driving systemic reform: The company has established a Product CEO mechanism, with end-to-end coordination from user research, product definition, project management, to marketing. Product definition has shifted from being solely led by the German side to being led by the Chinese side with joint Sino-German decision-making. Decision-making pace has accelerated from one to two product strategy committee meetings per month to generally two meetings per week involving Chinese and foreign management and professional teams.
Wang noted that while maintaining standards, the organization's response speed has significantly increased. Currently, nearly half of the ID. AURA T6 orders come from existing FAW-Volkswagen owners, indicating a strong customer base.
Challenges Ahead: From Launch Hype to Sustained Success
Although the ID. AURA T6 has secured over 30,000 orders, its subsequent market performance remains to be seen. The phenomenon of JV NEVs achieving "hot sales at launch but struggling to sustain" is not uncommon.
Industry data for August shows that among the top 20 JV NEV models by sales volume, only a handful maintained growth for three consecutive months. Of the 66 models with sales data, 60% sold fewer than 1,000 units per month. Wang also cited another figure: of approximately 700 NEV models sold in China, only 56 achieved monthly sales of 5,000 units—considered a benchmark for success—representing a success rate of just 8%.
With the launch of the ID. AURA T6, FAW-Volkswagen's Smart Electric 2.0 enters the mass production verification phase. Whether this model can transition from "hot sales at launch" to "sustained, rhythmic growth" through Chinese-led product definition, system acceleration, and user-friendly policies will be the true test for FAW-Volkswagen in the NEV赛道.
