On September 20, 2026, voters in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern went to the polls for state elections. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, initial projections showed the AfD narrowly leading the SPD, while the CDU faced the prospect of failing to re-enter the state parliament. CDU politician Philipp Amthor attributed his party's poor performance to internal issues, specifically criticizing CDU politicians from the state who had advocated cooperation with the AfD. Amthor stated on ZDF that such flirtation 'contributed to even greater uncertainty among our voters.' In Berlin, the Left Party led the House of Representatives election according to projections, with the CDU coming in second. SPD lead candidate Steffen Krach expressed doubt about the Left Party's proposed expropriation of large housing companies. AfD leader Alice Weidel suggested the CDU's poor result in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern could impact government formation in Saxony-Anhalt, urging the CDU to reconsider its 'firewall policy' against the AfD in eastern Germany.

Berlin SPD lead candidate Steffen Krach does not anticipate the expropriation of large real estate corporations, even after the Left Party's victory in the House of Representatives election.
"I am very sure that it will not work out in the end," Krach said on ARD. "We saw in the polls that the majority of Berliners remain opposed," he stated.

19:39 – Sunday, September 20 — Weidel sees opportunity for forming a government in Saxony-Anhalt
AfD leader Alice Weidel hopes that the disappointing election results for the CDU will benefit her own party in Saxony-Anhalt.
Asked how she justifies coalition talks with BSW, given her past criticism of the Union for pursuing left-wing policies, Weidel responded on ARD: "If there are overlaps, then we can do so, even in a minority government if necessary; that remains completely open."
Regarding the difficult government formation in Saxony-Anhalt, Weidel added: "Above all, we must give our colleagues in Saxony-Anhalt time to organize themselves there."
She suggested that the CDU's poor election result of just over five percent in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern might also impact Saxony-Anhalt, "namely that the CDU will think very carefully about whether it can continue with this firewall policy, especially in eastern Germany."
