SYDNEY, Sept 10 (Reuters) – Nvidia announced on Thursday plans to significantly expand data centre computing capacity in Australia, a move that would more than double the nation's current load through partnerships with local firms.
The chipmaker said it is working with Australian cloud and data centre companies including Firmus, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk, targeting a buildout of up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of AI-related capacity by 2027.
The announcement comes as Australia positions itself as a global hub for data centre investment, while simultaneously facing calls for stricter regulation over concerns about environmental impact, high energy consumption, and water usage.
According to a report from lobby group Data Centres Australia, which cites research from analysts DC Byte, Australia's current computing capacity stands at 1.6 GW.
Nvidia stated that the capacity expansion would support Australia's growing demand for AI. The data centres built by its partners will utilize Nvidia's DSX platform.
"Growing AI adoption across industries is increasing demand for high-performance computing," Nvidia said in a statement.
