Microsoft's Xbox unit announced it will impose monthly cloud gaming time limits for Game Pass subscribers starting in November, ending years of unlimited access. The move aims to balance rising costs and usage as demand for computing power increases. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers ($22.99/month) will get 15 hours of cloud gaming, Premium ($14.99/month) gets 10 hours, and Essential ($9.99/month) gets 5 hours. Players can pay for additional hours beyond the caps. Microsoft said only 4% of Game Pass subscribers stream games through the cloud for extended periods. The company is also testing ad-supported game streaming and evaluating other business model changes under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma to boost profitability. Non-subscribers can buy cloud gaming time to stream games they already own.

Microsoft's Xbox unit announced Thursday that it will impose monthly cloud gaming time limits for Game Pass subscribers, ending years of unlimited access as the company seeks to better balance usage and costs.
The new limits take effect in November. Players will be able to purchase additional hours beyond the caps.
Cost-Driven Model Shift
Across product organizations, Microsoft executives have been developing ways to charge customers based on usage to reflect rising costs. Demand is increasing for the company's finite computing power — similar to its technology peers — and clients of AI products such as GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot increasingly pay based on usage.
"We're introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer," Xbox said in a blog post. "Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost."
New Cloud Gaming Tiers
The monthly cloud gaming limits by subscription tier are as follows:
- Game Pass Ultimate ($22.99/month): 15 hours of cloud gaming
- Game Pass Premium ($14.99/month): 10 hours of cloud-based playtime
- Game Pass Essential ($9.99/month): 5 hours
Business Context
Inside Xbox, new CEO Asha Sharma has been evaluating business model changes to return the division to growth and boost profitability. In July, Xbox announced it would test ad-supported game streaming.
Microsoft noted that only 4% of Game Pass subscribers spend more than the allotted time each month streaming games through the cloud. The company did not specify fees for additional hours.
Xbox also stated that non-subscribers will be able to purchase cloud gaming time to stream games they already own.
