FIFA bans Argentina players, staff total 21 games for World Cup final brawl

FIFA has handed down a total of 21 games in suspensions to Argentina players and staff following a mass brawl after their 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. Midfielder Leandro Paredes received the longest ban of 10 matches for grabbing Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground. Defender Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven games for striking Rodri in the stomach. Both were fined $90,000. Thiago Almada received a one-match ban, and team official Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches. Spain's Gavi was also given a one-match ban for unsporting behavior. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was fined $310,000 and ordered to play its next home match with a 50% stadium closure due to fan behavior, including the display of a Falkland Islands banner and racist abuse. The bans apply only to international matches. The AFA has indicated it may appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
