Retired Marine Corps Maj. James Capers Jr. finally received the Medal of Honor in June 2026 at the White House from President Donald Trump, concluding a nearly 20-year struggle for recognition. Capers, a Black Marine officer, was recommended for the award for his actions in Vietnam with 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company in 1966-1967, but administrative records were lost. The push began in 2007 after a general initiated an investigation. The ceremony ended a period marked by grief over his wife's death, institutional rejection, and deteriorating health. Capers' leadership and bravery in Vietnam were recalled by his point man, Walter J. Doroski, who described his commanding presence and authority.
