Bangladesh's ruling BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as the country's new President, defeating Liberal Democratic Party chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed in the first contested presidential election since 1991. Alamgir secured 255 votes against Ahmed's 88 votes in the parliamentary vote. He is scheduled to take the oath of office on August 21, 2026.
