Micron launches $10 billion AI memory research lab in Boise

Micron Technology announced the launch of Micron Research Labs, a U.S.-based research institution headquartered in Boise, Idaho, backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade. The lab aims to unite customers, academic institutions, government agencies, and the semiconductor industry to advance memory technologies, compute architectures, packaging, and semiconductor manufacturing. Construction on the flagship Boise campus is set to begin in 2027, designed to accommodate hundreds of researchers. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra emphasized that America's AI future will be built on American-made memory. The initiative received support from executives at NVIDIA, Apple, Applied Materials, and Lam Research, as well as U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. This investment is separate from Micron's previously announced $250 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing and R&D, which is expected to support over 90,000 American jobs. The announcement comes amid growing strategic importance of high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators and U.S. efforts to reduce foreign dependence in semiconductor manufacturing.
