India's Defence Ministry adds 405 items to indigenisation list, covering Su-30MKI and T-90 tanks

The Indian Ministry of Defence has released its sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL), identifying 405 new defence items for domestic production, effectively placing an import ban on those components. The list, issued by the Department of Defence Production (DDP), includes Line Replaceable Units, sub-systems, spares, and raw materials valued at approximately Rs30.7bn ($320.8m). It covers key platforms such as the Su-30MKI fighter jet, AL-31FP engine, T-72 and T-90 tanks, BMP-II infantry vehicles, Advanced Light Helicopter, and missile systems like Konkurs-M and MRSAM. Of the total, 16 items are for the Indian Coast Guard and 389 for Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The initiative is part of the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) policy, aiming to reduce import dependence, boost domestic manufacturing, and engage MSMEs. Since 2020, over 15,700 defence items have been indigenised, resulting in import substitution worth Rs90bn, with DPSUs placing orders worth Rs100bn through March 2026. India's annual defence manufacturing output reached Rs1.78tn ($18.84bn) in FY2025-26, a 15.6% increase.
