On August 20, 2026, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down an explosive-laden marine drone just a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas field in the Black Sea. Defense Minister Radu Miratu announced the drone was 'loaded with explosives' and did not originate from Ukraine. Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the incident, blaming the Russian Federation for the intensification of such irresponsible acts. He thanked the pilots and coast guard, emphasizing the need to protect lives and critical infrastructure. The incident is part of a pattern of drone incidents in Eastern European NATO countries since Russia's war in Ukraine began nearly four and a half years ago, with similar occurrences reported in Poland and the Baltic states.

A marine drone was shot down by the Romanian military just a few hundred meters from a gas field. Romania's president blames Russia for the incident.
A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed an explosive-laden marine drone on Thursday, according to the government in Bucharest. The drone was hit several hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas field in the Black Sea, Defense Minister Radu Miratu announced on Facebook. It was "loaded with explosives" and did not originate from Ukraine.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan published a photo on X, apparently showing the drone. He thanked the pilots of the deployed fighter jets and the coast guard.
"I condemn with the utmost severity the intensification of such irresponsible incidents by the Russian Federation."
The top priority was protecting the lives of the people working on the platform and preserving critical infrastructure, the president said.
Broader Context
In recent months, there have been repeated drone incidents in Eastern European NATO countries. Since the start of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine nearly four and a half years ago, Romania has recorded multiple drone overflights and crashes on its territory.
Poland and the Baltic states also regularly report similar incidents. Most recently, the discovery of an explosive drone at Leipzig Airport also caused concern.
