FinanceReliance Industries and Rolls-Royce have announced their intent to partner on the design, development, and potential manufacture of a sovereign combat engine for India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The proposed collaboration aims to explore the creation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. The companies will also consider broader collaboration in defence, civil aerospace, and emerging power and propulsion technologies. This partnership aligns with India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative, which promotes domestic defence production and technology indigenisation. The announcement marks a notable shift in India's approach to engine development, as Safran has been the longstanding French engine partner for India and was reportedly set to support the Gas Turbine Research Establishment in developing a 120 kilonewton engine for the AMCA. This development follows HAL's withdrawal from its previous role in the AMCA fighter jet initiative earlier this year.
