OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT specifically designed for teenagers aged 13 to 17, featuring stronger content protections including restrictions on discussions about suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual topics. The chatbot, which launches Tuesday, is tailored to provide homework help that guides students to find answers themselves rather than simply providing them. OpenAI does not verify users' ages but uses age assurance based on query patterns to estimate if someone is under 18, automatically placing minors into the teen version. Parental controls require opt-in from both teen and guardian, allowing features like 'quiet hours' and safety notifications for high-risk situations. The launch comes amid concerns from parents and experts about teen AI usage, with a 2025 Common Sense Media study finding over 70% of U.S. teens use AI chatbots for companionship. OpenAI has also blocked the chatbot from suggesting it has personal feelings or consciousness to prevent emotional overreliance.
