FinanceJane Street, a major trading firm, suffered a $15 billion loss in July 2026, primarily due to its investment in the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness and long positions in technology stocks that declined during a broad market selloff. This marked the first negative monthly trading revenue for Jane Street since 2016. The firm's hedges were ineffective as losses accumulated gradually. Despite the setback, Jane Street's year-to-date trading revenue exceeded $40 billion, surpassing its 2025 total. Situational Awareness, run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, lost about $35 billion in assets after margin calls forced a distressed sale of its holdings to Citadel. The fund had used up to 400% leverage and peaked at $45 billion before dropping to roughly $10 billion. Aschenbrenner has since made a $400 million private investment to rebuild.
