PoliticsThe Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), chaired by Alexander Thomas, has directed the GCDA (Greater Cochin Development Authority) and the Kochi Corporation to take immediate steps to widen a 200-meter bottlenecked stretch on the eastern end of Chilavannur Bund Road in Kochi. The road is crucial for connectivity to the Vyttila-Aroor NH 66 Bypass and has the potential to decongest the congested SA Road and Vyttila junction. The commission ordered the executive engineers of both agencies to conduct a joint inspection within a week and submit a report to the District Collector. The Collector must then convene a meeting with senior officials to address the over 30-year delay in clearing the bottleneck, assess land acquisition needs and funds, and submit an action plan within six weeks. The secretaries of the two civic bodies must also submit independent reports. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for October 23.
